My Own Cultural Bias
So I saw an article on the sidebar over at Fox News with the title "Turkey Blast Kills 3". My immediate thought was Uh oh... some rednecks fired up the deep fryer a little too soon before Thanksgiving....
Turns out what actually happened is much worse.

Deep fryer burns, from the big ones that can do a whole turkey, are quite common. They really spatter a lot when you dip the bird. If there is too much oil in the fryer, it can overflow and catch fire. It's also tricky removing a hot bird from the oil.
My father and I took to deep-frying something pretty much every saturday back when I was in highschool. Usually we'd go down to the fish market and find some nice seafood -- fish, shrimp, squid, etc... It was one of those simple propane-burner-on-a-metal-stand outdoor deals, with a metal pot and wire mesh net for frying -- real heavy duty stuff, also duals as a crawfish and/or crab boiler if you replace the oil with water. Anywho, one time, he jostled the pot-full-o'-oil, causing a little bit to spill out and hit the flame. Let me just say I thank God we were sufficiently far away from the garage eaves, because the resultant 15-foot tower of flame, impressive though it was, might have been a serious impediment to our house not catching on fire.
Fortunately, eyebrows grow back eventually.
